Georgetown Hit By Flash Floods

GEORGETOWN – Continuous heavy rain for more than four hours since 3am has caused several roads in the city here to be under water due to flash floods.

They included Jalan Perak, part of Jalan Masjid Negeri, part of Jalan Logan, Jalan Makloom, Kampung Makam, Jalan Sungai Pinang, Jalan Anson and Jalan Patani.

Timur Laut District Civil Defence officer (disaster and operations), Noor Mohd Saidi Noor Lajis, said that in some areas the water was about 2.9 meter causing hundreds of vehicles to be trapped in the traffic congestion which lasted for almost three hours.

“More than 300 families were also affected by the floods, but there was no order for evacuation and the water has receded,” he told Bernama here.

However, he said the Civil Defence Department was still monitoring the situation.

A resident at Jalan P. Ramlee, Mohd Sophian Mohd Zain, 38, said he regretted the state government’s attitude for failing to resolve the flood problem in the area.

“Since the past two months, we have been hit by floods twice. Our household items and furniture are damaged. Something should be done by the state government to address the problem,” he added.

Another resident, Rahmatullah Abdul Majid, 41, said the floods damaged some of Aidilfitri preparations made by her family.

“We  lost a few jars of our Aidilfitri cookies and our new Aidilfitri clothing which are kept in the cupboard are all soaked,” she added.

Housewife Norjan Mohd Sabdin, 55, said water had entered her house when she woke up for ‘sahur’ (pre-dawn meal’ about 4.30am.

“My refrigerator, gas stove, furniture and a motorcycle are submerged in the floods, she added. – BERNAMA
