IPOH: The Barisan Nasional Government adheres to Islamic principles, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He added that every action taken by the Government was and should be based on syariah principles and what was sought in Islam.

“Islam does not propagate narrow-mindedness. Yet, there are those who do not uphold the religion in their actions,” he said after breaking fast with Barisan component party leaders and the people at the residence of Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir here.

Separately, Najib hit out at critics who claimed that Felda Ventures Group Holdings (FVGH) would go bankrupt if it was listed.

He added that there was no need for them to spread lies even if they didn’t support measures that would benefit the rakyat.

Earlier, on his 1Malaysia blogsite, Najib said the Olympic Games would inspire people to put aside their personal differences and come together in peace and harmony.

“There is much that we can accomplish in togetherness and if we adopt such an attitude all the time, and not just once every four years, I believe this world can truly be a better place,” he said.

The London 2012 Olympic Games begin in London tomorrow.

He said 30 of Malaysia’s finest would compete against the best athletes in the world and that Ma-laysians would be cheering them on.

He said there was always something special about Olympic years, which he believed was in part due to the memories they created.

“I remember the Harimau Malaya qualifying for their first Olympics in Munich 1972 and being glued to my seat as we took on the German team.

“Sadly, we lost 3-0. But I was so proud and inspired by our players that day.

“And then 20 years later in Barcelona, I was overjoyed when I watched shuttlers Razif and Jalani Sidek win Malaysia’s first medal, a bronze in the men’s doubles,” he added. –The Star
