KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 16,010 lance corporals are being promoted to corporal after serving five years in their present position, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said.

He said the time-based promotions did not require them to be promoted.

They however had to pass their departmental general orders examination and screening and be recommended by their commanding officer, Ismail told reporters at the Aidilfitri celebration organised by the Criminal Investigation Department at the Royal Malaysian Police College here Saturday.

He said the first phase of the promotions involving 1,294 policemen was completed on July 15.

The other 14,716 would be promoted in stages soon, he added.

“The promotions have financial implications for the federal government, but the amount involved has been budgeted for, and they are certain to increase motivation and improve service,” Ismail said.

Under the time-based promotion method introduced by the Prime Minister on Police Day in 2010, constables will be promoted to lance corporal after three years.

However, interviews still be required for promoting sergeants to sergeant major, and sergeant majors to sub-inspector. – BERNAMA
