Who Would It Be?

Who Would Replace Anwar As The Opposition Leader?

    August 4, 2011

KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial is coming to an end.

If Anwar is sentenced guilty and imprisoned, it would really be a big problem!

Who would replace him as the opposition leader? Who would lead the Pakatan Rakyat in the next general election? If Pakatan Rakyat is able to gain more than a half of parliamentary seats, who would be the Prime Minister?

At this stage, these are all hypothetical questions. However, as the sentencing day and the next general elections are approaching, they could become real problems.

PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, DAP Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are not the best candidate.

Hadi Awang is not a comprehensive political leader. He lacks international perspective and leadership. Moreover, they might have to lose many non-Muslim votes once he is named Anwar’s successor.

Lim Kit Siang has sufficient experience and ability. Unfortunately, the Malaysian political reality does not allow a non-Malay supreme leader so far. Making him the successor will definitely create an uproar from the Malay community.

Wan Azizah does not have sufficient political qualifications, not to mention that she can no longer contest in parliamentary election.

As for PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, it is not their time yet and they might have to wait for another 10 or 20 years.

After a long observation, political observers found a possible, but unexpected candidate – Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, or better known as Ku Li.
Many people might immediately ask: “How can it be?”

However, after they have thought about it for 60 seconds, they would say: “It’s possible!”

Ku Li has a complete set of political qualification and a comprehensive political spectrum. From the ruling party to the opposition party, religious to common customs, conservative to liberal, and left to right, he seems to have always maintained at the middle. It might help attract middle votes, in addition to votes from both sides.

Ku Li’s prestige and status could help in attracting more votes and gaining more seats. If there is a regime transition period, he could fight for support from royal families and other powerful units.

Theoretically, he seems to be qualified enough. In reality, Ku Li has recently become president of the Angkatan Amanah Merdeka (Amanah).
The non-governmental organisation does not seem to have much of a role but it can actually be a platform for Ku Li to drive his political agenda.
Does Ku Li has such intention? I have no doubt on it.

In fact, Ku Li has never given up the goal. He has been trying very hard to achieve his goal over all these years.
Two political actions after the 2008 general election and before Tun Abdullah Badawi stepped down, have tried to make Ku Li the candidate under the compromise of all.

Aiming at the Prime Minister position, Ku Li worked with Musa Hitam to challenge Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the 1980s, formed the Semangat 46 and later forged alliances with the DAP and PAS.

Ku Li is familiar with such political leverage and perhaps, it is going to be his last chance this time. Of course, it still depends on whether the Pakatan Rakyat is willing to accept it and whether Anwar is willing to let go.
